Do airlines provide traveling crates for large dogs?

I sold her crate because it’s made of bars and I’m afraid of things falling on her. She needs to travel in one of those big plastic crates.

  • when i traveled via airplane the airline directed me to a website to buy the crate … they had crates for the littlest to biggest dog … but if you are asking if the airline will lend you a crate, no, you buy your own crate … if you are looking for a cheaper crate and don’t need brand new, check out craigslist or even post an ad for the crate size you are looking for … so often people buy the crates and then they sit in the garage and people are often happy to sell them …

  • YOu didn’t waste anything by selling the wire crate – the airlines cannot let you transport in those.

Airlines do in fact have crates they will sell you, that comply with their regulations, but you are better off buying it elsewhere for cheaper. Make sure you check with the particular airline you would be using, and also make sure they will actually take your dog to the *place* you want to go. There are strict regulations about weather and seasons, and right now a lot of places would be off the list due to very high temperatures.

You also need to be aware of breed restrictions, since a lot of dogs have breathing issues and would die on the way.

Honestly, you should think long and hard about the necessity of shipping any dog anywhere – it is scary, traumatic, and not out of the question that it is life threatening in some cases, and going through the experience changes a dog’s personality forever. It’s far better to board a dog locally, or better yet have someone visit your dog in your own home while you are gone, and if you are relocating, find a dog where you are going. There are dogs all over the world, and the one you are thinking of putting on a plane would be better off wherever it is now.

Before you go to the expense of doing this at all, consider what it will mean for your dog.

  • No, you have to buy a crate that is airline approved or they wont let your dog on the plane. They don’t rent crates. You have to provide your own. Call the airline and ask them what size crate is acceptable for your dogs size. That makes a difference too.

  • No, you must purchase an airline approved crate. Some airlines do sell them.

  • Yes they do (buying). Contact the airline, although you may fine one cheaper on Ebay?

Here is one I found, which may not be big enough? on the UK version of Ebay.

  • You have to provide your own crate.

  • They sure do, but it would be much cheaper to buy a new one as crate hire fees are ridiculous!!

  • You can call them but I don’t think they do any more. And it would cost more then if you went and bought one from a pet store like Petsmart/Petco.
