Download speeds and bandwidth Q.- Actual differences between 6MB and 1MB rated broadband speeds?

To save $20 a month, I was considering downgrading my broadband Internet speed from 6MB to 1MB. Problem is I have no idea what exactly to expect from this. With the 6MB connection, pages load instantly (at least with Firefox browser), movies play fine, downloads from file sharing websites are often at 6KB. But if I change to 1MB speed it doesn’t necessarily mean I won’t see the same download speeds, right? It doesn’t mean that my download speed will instantly be 6 times slower, right? What it means is my AVAILABLE download speed will be 6 times less, yes? But if I was getting 6KB max. from a website that shouldn’t be affected, yes?

Do I understand this right?

  • It is all relative. Yes, your speed will be about one tenth of what it was previously. You WILL notice a significant difference. Think about it, you were getting getting UP to 6MB’s before the change. the reality is you average speed was probably some where between 2 and 5 MB’s. With the proposed change you’ll be lucky to average 5kbs. You will have difficulty streaming movies.

  • The internet, except for local connections, seldom exceeds 6kbps, so for any single connection you probably won’t see any difference. But a 6mbps connection would allow you to do 10 things at the same time at full speed each. That’s about the only difference. (And downloading from a nearby [1 miles or less] server would be limited to about 1mbps.)
