four eggs in a dove's nest?!?

I have a dove’s nest on my window and though it is not the first time for this to happen, during previous times I only found two eggs in the nest. This time however there were two eggs till I woke this morning to find four eggs! Is it possible for two females to share a nest or what is going on here? And would it be possible for all four to hatch and survive?

  • the average amout of eggs for a dove is two but some birds so ‘ egg dumping ‘ where they lay their eggs into other birds nests yes I think it would be a great idea if you put up a feeder

  • I don’t really think that the mother would share a nest with another bird. I think that she laid two the first day and then laid another two the second. My bird (cockatiel) when she is in heat or whatever you call it, usually lays one egg every other day until she gets to 7, or 8. since their not fertilized though they dont hatch. But the dove’s eggs are probably fertilized and at least 3 of the eggs will hatch. Maybe even four. But if you touch them or their nest the mother will most likely abandon them forever and either you or someone willing will have to take care of them or they will die. I think even if you try to take care of them they will die, so be very careful!! Good luck!!!!!

  • Yes, it would be possible, but that means extra work for the mum. A good idea if you want them all to live is to have a bird feeder somewhere near, but not too close.

And no, they don’t usually share nests so the four probably came from that one big momma!
