If you jump off your left foot, you approach and jump from the right side of the pit, that is, the pit is on your right when you jump, so that the take off foot is not next to the pit, but away.
This allows you to drive the off, or right leg, up as you jump.
The approach is like the letter J, you curve and jump while facing the far standard or up right, you are at an angle you are not parallel to the bar.
