HOW TO DETER SPIDERS?!?

I live in North West of England and yes I know we don’t get many spiders. However for some reason they seem to be VERY attracted to my house and I am absolutely terrified.

I’m asking now because I have just come across the biggest spider I’ve ever seen and I very nearly had a panic attack! It sounds pathetic I know they help the environment and I shouldn’t be scared, but I couldn’t be more afraid and I can’t change that.

I could really do with any advice which will deter them because I really can’t cope with them anymore šŸ™ ANY ideas please! I’ve heard moth balls help but I don’t know what they are and where I can get them?! And lemons or tea tree spray are these true?

I realise I’m overeacting but I really need help with this, thanks!

  • Moth balls are naphtha. They will not bother a spider. They don’t even work for moths. Insect spray will kill them. Suggest you spray around the eve of your house and around windows and doors. In southern USA spiders are very common. We just ignore them. .
  • When it comes to pests in my home, I have no shame, I have no mercy.

Call a pest control company. I lived in a place in California with a spider problem. Regular spraying by the pest guy kept them in check.

  • EEEEEEEEEEEK!!!!
LOL! Most likely a few previously laid eggs inside your house and now you’re dealing with their offspring. They eat other bugs and each other if those aren’t present. The big one you spotted probably is getting fat gobbling up his cousins. Once there’s nothing else for them to feed upon inside they’ll either move outdoors or starve to death in some dark corner.
Now you could squash them with a fly swatter or hit them with bug spray like Raid. They enter homes thru gaps around doors’ seals and thresholds, poorly fitted window screens and other gaps in exterior walls. There are bug sprays that leave a water-proof residue which remains effective for months. The lil’ buggers pick up the poison on their feet and die from it 24 hours later. Those are good to use on exterior surfaces and interior areas where they like to roam, which would be the places you’ve been spotting them. Don’t worry about using chemicals since those won’t hurt humans nor pets unless they inhale all the contents of the can. Better living thru chemistry!

I reside in ultra-buggy East Texas and leave spiders alone since they help keep the rest in check. Have three roaming my house and named them Ike, Mike and Gordo. I see them occasionally scurrying along the baseboards room to room looking for their next meal. I find their victims when I move furniture while vacuuming.

  • I am an arachnophobe myself, so I completely understand how you feel. Every so often I find wolf spiders in my house, and it makes me shudder. Fortunately I am nowhere near as frightened as I used to be. Still…

The big secret for keep away spiders is….drum roll…..cleaning and tidying. Not because spiders like dirt, and I am assuming your house is filthy. It is because spiders like peace and calm, and if you are always disturbing all the areas of your house the spiders will give up and move on. And, of course, you are bound to vacuum up a few dozen of the little buggers in the process, which is not a bad thing.

When I first moved into my house, I had many more spiders than I do now, because I had no time to really tidy and move things in, and I was almost never home. Over the years, I have settled in, and do not see quite as many. Also, I have two cats, who will hunt and eat any insect, and that helps a great deal.

So, that is the trick — tidy, and be sure to take a feather duster or the vacuum to the corners of each room. Keep busting those webs, and the arachnid population will plummet.
