Hello
I live in the Leeds area and would love to volunteer for charity on Christmas Day, as it’ll just be me and the dog, and I thought I could do something fulfilling. I’m thinking either dishing out meals to the homeless, visiting old people who don’t have relatives, maybe some cuppas and a chat to the lonely in hospital, that kind of thing.
I have Googled to the nth degree and found nothing where I can put my name down and register, and I really don’t have the time to be spending every waking hour on the phone ringing round. I’m waning more towards the homeless/elderly as at least I might be able to take my dog with me (obviously not to hospital) as animals usually go down well with the lonely…plus I don’t really want to leave her on her own all day.
Has anyone done this in the Leeds area before or could give me pointers? Every Google hit that looks like a go-er is based in London which I can’t do.
Thanks
Mel
Update:
Edited to say, my dog is a spaniel so very friendly and very popular with most dog lovers

From the Volunteer Centre Leeds: “The European Year of Volunteering in Leeds 2011 focuses on health and wellbeing volunteering during November and December.”

If they can’t find you a particular opportunity, they should be able to put you in touch with someone in the sector who can help you find something.
Hope this helps

what a nice idea. Your local old age home would probably really appreciate help or just visits- and they usually have email now so you shouldn’t have to spend ages on the phone. If your dog is of the friendly pattable variety that also generally goes down a treat.
can’t help you directly with places, but a quick google search should bring up places; sheltered housing or old folks homes.

How about doing a volunteer adopt a family thing like this?
