If you do the upgrade everything should be as you left it when the installation is done. But just in case it is always a good idea to back up everything before you start. I upgraded to Windows from vista and everything worked out great.
If you do a clean install you will lose everything.
clean install, it will delete anything but in your case windows vista, then it will suites fine, I got Windows Vista Basic, and going to Windows Ultimate, I was surprised that even my files in desktop isn’t erase, nothing is erase, just it update the OS, all your settings will be the same, even your computer password. But back up important things if you should because, if you got some errors or the computer turns off, then that could end the files over there making it corrupt. so no, one of the data will be deleted

No, all the files will still be there even that u upgrade it, for example, I try to upgrade my Windows XP PC into a Windows Vista, and all the files are still there, this only infect your system not your hardrive with the memory in it.
Nothing will be deleted if you do the upgrade. If you do a fresh install your screwed. Might as well backup a couple things if you have an external hard drive or flash drive in case something goes wrong. Better safe then sorry.
