Is the wage I’m getting paid at my current job even legal?!?

I am currently working at a horse stable as a stablehand. My job is strictly hard, physical labor and we receive no breaks or lunches (I can sit down for a few minutes if I need to, but that’s about it). On an average day, I’ll work from 8:30am-3:pm and I clean 16 stalls daily (as well as add fresh bedding as needed), turn horses in and out, and sweep the barns. The way I have to clean stalls is by using muck tubs. Once the cart I use to put the muck tubs on is full, I have to wheel them out to a large bin/dumpster and dump the tubs in there. It is by far the hardest work I have ever done in my life. I have had horses all my life and have even worked at a couple other barns over the years, but I have never had to do such laborious work.

So here’s my question: I only get paid $6/hr. Is that even legal?!? The last time I worked at a barn was back when I was a junior in high school (about 6 1/2 years ago) and I was paid about $5.50-6./hr, which was fairly normal at my age. Now, at 24 years old, I obviously have some bills and other big kid stuff to take care of. *sighhh*

I obviously don’t plan on hanging around there much longer and am actively looking for another job, but until then, I would really like to know whether this is legal or not and whether I’m owed some money!

P.S. I live in Ohio (not sure if that changes anything…).

  • most agriculture and animal husbandry are exempt from minimum wage and overtime laws.

  • No, if you are of age, then your are entitled to the minimum payment of $7.40 by the Federal Law. Speak with them at your work, however, about this and investigate until your problem is either resolved or ended

  • Don’t know about Ohio state law but they sure are breaking Federal Minimum wage laws.

  • Forget fast – there’s no such factor as break the bank quick….. forget online surverys together with other frauds.

    You will discover plenty of legitimate ways to generate money – simply how much you’re making would depend how seriously you’re taking it. There will be something for everyone if you are ready to put some effort in then there’s pointless you can’t earn around youd like.
