Is there a thing I can read to understand engines and how they work so I could build them?

I want to be able to fix a car without a mechanic I want to be my own mechanic.

  • Try books like Auto repairs for dummies and How stuff works: engines. Then move onto harder and more advanced books. There are probably even guides online as well.

Not trying to make you feel like an idiot, I am studying to become a mechanic and I used them to get me me started and they told me the basics.

I suggest that if you want to be your own mechanic and do all the work on your car, you go and take a class on how to do that type of stuff. There is one that runs near me for like 3 months and it tells people what they need to do and how to do it properly.

I do want to warn you, I see a number of cars that need serious work because people have tried to DIY on their vehicle and completely stuffed them up. like tightening the bolts on the engine too tight and causing it to blow up.
