My 1 year old oscar fish ate its tank mate..?

so i recently brought home one fish that a friend gave me be cause he was getting ride of his tank and couldn’t take care of it anymore. he was with my oscar for only 3 days and today i wake up and saw that the other fish head was like bited off! he has 2 other tanks mates 2 plecos but he never bothers them..i have never feed him feeder fish or anything like that so i wonder why he ate it i’m scared now that he’ll get sick I’ve had him for so long now.

FYI his in a 45 gallon tank..

Update:

  • Oscar Fishes are territory Bullish. You should not keep Oscar with gold fish.

Oscars Fishes are cichlids. You can only keep cichlids varieties with them.

But you shouldn’t go for smaller cichlids than Oscar, It will be eaten. For example you can keep parrot fish, Green terror, Leporinus, Severums.

But to keep these fishes you need bigger tank(at least 80-120 gallon), Because they all loves territorial jurisdiction. If not then they can cause disturbance for your Oscar.

While Putting Fish into tank remember the ratio should be 2 inch per 5 Litters of water.

  • The Oscar doesn’t know that goldfish isn’t supposed to be a “feeder fish.”

Anyhow, as Catx stated, Oscars will kill other fish invading their territory.

Especially in a tank as small as 45 gallons, this outcome was inevitable.

  • You introduced an invader into the Oscar’s territory, so he killed it. That’s what happened.

He likely views the Plecos as part of the furniture, that’s why they’re still alive.

FYI he really needs a tank larger than 45g.

  • young oscar fish must be separated by size to minimize cannibalism.
