My betta fish is losing color?!?

I keep it in a .5 gallon tank. One of those marina betta kits. Lately, it’s been losing its blue green colorand its fins looks weird. Now its a pale blue. And what I mean by weird is that is sorta has jagged fins It’s a delta tail. It will also rest on the gravel. It also kind of floats vertically and uses its fins a little. I change the water every week. The tank does have multi-colored gravel and a plastic plant I got from Petsmart.

Update:

It has no heater as I was told by a Petco person that they live best at a temperature of 65°-75°. It’s at 70° right now. I feed it 3 pellets per day and it gobbles it up. The multi-colored gravel is at the cup thingy in the middle of it.

  • So, are the actual edges of the tail are jagged…you’ve got fin rot! I will post treatment info and a link

In this case, it is caused by poor water quality. In a .5 you need to change the water daily. If you have a 5 gallon then you can do weekly changes.

As far a color changing, you might have a marble betta…They change color dramatically over a few months

    Treatment

“Treatment Conservative: Treat with Aq.Salt at 1 tsp/gal. Increase water changes to 1% daily. Replace accurate amount of salt following water changes. Add Stress Coat to help repair tissue. If there is little to no improvement within the first 5 days, you can increase the salt dosage gradually to 2tsp/gal but do not continue any salt treatments past 10 days. Medication: If Conservative treatment is ineffective use API Tetracycline, API Fungus Cure, API Triple Sulfa, OR API Erythromycin. Also add Stress Coat to help regrowth. Continue until fins/tail stop receding and start showing some new growth. “

  • Look up what to feed a betta and start feeding it other things on top of the pellets. Also, you need to get a bigger tank! Get it at least a 3 gallon. It would look nicer and your fish would have room to swim. You do need a filter, as well, and be sure to do 1/2 water changes every week.

For the varied food, put a container of relatively large container of water outside if it is warm enough for mosquitoes. You should see little bugs in it after a few days. These should be mosquito larvae. Net out a couple and feed them to your betta. Mosquito larvae are part of a betta’s natural diet.

Bettas will also eat freeze dried things like blood worms or shrimp. Consider giving these to it as well.

Varried diets help keep your fish healthy and happy so give it a try.

  • It may be going under stress or the ammonia levels are too high, think about getting your water tested. How long have you had the fish?
