  • My first guess is that you may have deleted the partition when you did the installation, in which case you would need original CDs from Dell or a Windows XP CD.

If you still have the partition, then you may just need to mark the first partition as active in your disk management (control panel->administrative tools->storage)

  • Simple thing first:

If you are sure that you never reinstall operating system before using CDs then you can use recovery partition to do PCrestoer and aslo known as Dell factory image restore, depend upon operating systems.

If you did Operating system reinstall in past by cd no more valid option

    If not:

Try pressing F key for Vista and win, and for XP CTRL + F it should work.

If it is not working in vista and win then you can try following:

You need to put in the Operating CD which you got with computer, Press F and select option to boot from CD/DVD, and in there Select option “REPAIR Your Computer” which will be on the right hand side of INSTALL button.

    Repair your computer

Under which you will be having multiple optons :

. Click Command Prompt from the System Recovery Options window.

. In the Administrator window – command prompt, type the following lines, pressing after each line.

    path = d:/windows;d:/windows/system

    d:

    CD Tools

    PCRestore

. In the Dell Factory Image Restore window, click Next.

. In the Confirm Data Deletion window, click to select Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition, and then click Next. The message Factory image successfully restored! appears when the process is complete.

. Click Finish to restart the system.

IF WINDOWS XP CTRL + F not working :

For windows xp users whose system not booting to

Pcrestoer by pressing ctrl + F they can download boot_dsr.exe for doing it.

and if still not working on the any case whether it be xp/vista/win call delltechnical support and they will send you the recovery CDs.

    That’s the only resolution.

still don’t trust me call technical support and check it out.

In addition in new computer dell datasafe local backup . is replacing Dell factory image restore hence you might get option for Dell Datasafe local backup. select option recover my computer in that.

  • To check and see if it is possible open my computer. If partition d: still exist. Follow Lazy’s answer. Ctrl + F while boting up. If you don’t have a d: partition still intact you will need a Windows XP disk.

  • WIth newer dells (less than years at least) you can hit control-f on the dell screen and return the system to factory new, is that the one your refering to? However will blank everything on your drive so backup your files!
