I have done research and know the basics of surrogacy, but i am, a bit overwhelmed with what to do first, and the whole process. What are the legal requirements? Does my surrogate have to have a psychological evaluation if we are going the independent route? I have SO many questions.

The problem is that surrogacy laws vary state to state, so what you need to do will change based on where you live.

Another good way to get started is to pick a doctor!! An OB/Gyn or nurse/midwife (or w/e) that both you and your friend are comfortable with will be a key part of your lives for the next several months. They will also be able to answer all your questions about the process in your area 🙂

As Jamie mentioned, make sure you educate yourself about the law in your state. In some states, surrogacy is illegal, so you have to be careful. You should find a lawyer who is an expert in surrogacy. While it may seem unnecessary when you’re working with a close friend, it’s important for you to have a surrogacy contract.

Even though you’re going doing an independent surrogacy, you’ll also want to make sure you do a psycho-social screening and, more importantly, a medical screening. Your IVF clinic will handle that.
