Need some advice on amniocentesis (Amnio)?

I need some outcomes in regards to Amnio’s from people who have actually experienced it, no opinions on this question please as opinions are not statistics or true to life.

A really good friend of mine has just found out that she is on the border of high risk and there is not a lot of information on the net in regards to the outcome of this. She has had all the tests and it has been recommended that she has an amnio – Of course, she is in 2 minds about it !!!!!!!!!

If you have been faced with this option can you please advise of the outcome, regardless of if you went ahead or not with it and also what the outcome was.

Obviously for both the people who are able to answer and my friend I hope it is all positive outcomes, but i would like to hear both sides.

There is a thing i found on the net which states ” the chance of miscarriage is 1 in 2, it’s now more like 1 in 1,6 as the current statistics is outdated.”

Thank you.

  • My mum had an amino 10 years ago as she was over 40 and high risk for downs. She rested after and my brother is 10 now and no downs. Its a really tough decision to make cause on one hand there is a small risk of developing problems and losing the pregnancy and on the other hand they are often wrong before the amino when they say your at high risk.

On the bad side i have a contact on another site i belong to and she had the amino and she lost the pregnancy. Hoiwever that coud of happenned either way, she had no proof it was the amnio but its easier to think thats it. She also said that she would have an amnio again on her next pregnancy

  • When I went to get get routine blood work done to test for trisonomy 18, downs and spina bifida, they found out that my baby and a 1 in 361 chance it would of downs. I also have a rare genetic disorder that affects males more than females so I went to a genetic doctor who reccomended that I get the amnio so I could see if the baby had downs and to determine the sex to see if it was male. The doctor told me the procedure and informed me that 1 out of 2 females will have a miscarriage. I stopped the doctor there and declined the amnio. Percentage wise, 1 out of 361 is two thirds of one percent that that baby would of downs, and if it does, I’m prepared. As for my genetic disorder, if its a boy its easily treatable with meds. Im just a firm believer that what will be will be, and the reason for amnio the genetic doc said was to find a genetic mutation and give the mother the opportunity for an abortion if the baby does have it. Good luck to your friend

  • i had amnio with my son, i was only 20 but my blood results came back 1 to190 chance of downs. i then had the desision to make on amnio. at first i said no, i will love the child either way, but my partner realy needed to know so he could prepare for it if he was downs. i knew what to expect as i work at a care home for learning disabilities. so went ahead for it. they told me the chance of miscariage would be 1 in 1. i was 17wks pregnant when i had it. i was petrified when they did it as i looked at my baby on the screen, i though would be last time i see my boy. it didnt hurt, just was scary. the next 24hrs was the wait to see if i lose my baby, thank god i never. then it was the 2wk wait for my results. the day came, and they said you are having a healthy little boy with no problems! he is now 21months sat playing now with his toys. im now nearly 6wks with #2 and probably have the same blood results again they said, but i will not be going through that ordeal again, just have to wait and see, but if my baby is downs, i will love him/her just the same as my little boy. gd luck to your friend

  • i had an amnio with my second child as she was at high risk of spina bifida (my older sister was born with this condition). i had the amnio and luckily she was fine. it is quite an uncomfortable procedure. i had it and they told me to go home and rest as much as i could as, like u said, there is a high risk of miscarrying. i was lucky, i rested, no miscarriage and my results came back clear. good luck to your friend, whatever she decides to do x

  • I haven’t had one myself, but my mother did when she was pregnant with my youngest brother. She was 42 at the time. She said it hurt a lot, and she screamed and my father fainted. The results were absolutely fine, and my brother was born healthy.
