i need to know how much money bill tilden made for a project that im doing about the 1920s? what was his saralary and how does it compare with comparable athletes in the same sport today?!!??

  • That would be very tough to figure out, because a top pro like Tilden would get a lot of cash under the table from tournament organizers who want to guarantee him showing up. Also, he spent money like water flowing over Niagra Falls.

    A lot of his career was in *amateur* tennis. He didn’t turn professional until 1931. Check out the Wikipedia article below.

    In those days, 99% of those who played *never* turned pro, because pro’s weren’t allowed to play Wimbledon, Davis Cup, US Championships, etc. That didn’t change until 1968, when Open Tennis began.

    To put it into today’s terms, the only men who would actually be pro’s [allowed to play openly for money] would be Djokovic, Rafa, Fed, Murray, and maybe a couple others. All the rest would be amateurs.

    Tennis players don’t get a salary, unless it’s for endorsements. They get paid when they win, and don’t get paid when they lose. It’s not like baseball or basketball, where pro’s get a contract.
