  • You’ve never heard of Rumspringa, I guess.

  • I think you overlooked a critical element there.

    If I understand it correctly, Amish choose a frugal lifestyle, isolated from many examples of modern technology, to promote humility, unity of the community and a direct awareness of reality.

    Upon reflection, there is profundity here. Consider the enormous amount of time consumed by doing utterly futile and meaningless things due to modern technology.

    How much time does the average youth spend playing computer games that literally have no purpose except killing time? In fact, creating the false image of purpose (think of what are laughably called `achievements´ in World of Warcraft) can drive someone to invest extra time in what is killing time.

    Perhaps the completely ordered and controlled society of the Amish isn´t for everybody… but I bet they are pretty content. Quite a few people have occasional moments of quiet desperation when they reflect on the futility of much of modern society. There is no futility in Amish society.

    Well, unless you count religion. But it plays an important part in keeping their society the way it is.

  • Amish live in small rural communities where strong family and social ties allow them their own distinctive and separate way of life. The family is the heart of Amish community, individual identity and spiritual life.

    However in recent times they’ve diversified from farming and in some communities more than 80% work in small businesses making things like indoor and garden furniture, small sheds, quilts and leather goods.

    The Amish produce many of their needs, rearing animals to produce meat, growing corn for food and for feeding animals, and growing vegetable both for food and for sale. Amish women make most of the clothes. But they are not totally self-sufficient and rely on the outside community for other requirements.

    Amish values

    putting God and community ahead of the individual;

    a life of ‘goodness’, rather than a life of intellect;

    life as a spiritual activity;

    wisdom, rather than technical knowledge;

    community welfare, rather than competition;

    separation from, rather than integration with, modern worldly society;

    non-resistance – seeking peaceful resolution to conflicts

  • Actually teenage Amish children do get to use modern technology. When they become an adult they have to choose to be Amish or leave their families.
