staying up all night do you punish?

My elevn year was grounded from the Television for sneaking it on in the middle of the night (its supposed to be off) so the grounding was for it no television. So then the next nights, toys played with, the D.S. was used, then games. Ive had the talk about how sleep is needed, for health etc. then the next day after school, tired moody mean. I don’t know what is an appropriate punishment. I take things away, tons of them and the stuff that was played with, any other ideas?

  • i used to do this, if its with DVR encourage him to record what he watches. if its not with DVR i would suggest putting him to bed by 11, he has to stop watching by 10:15.

take his toys, his D.S. since it has the nintendo WFC (wi-fi connection) gimmick it gives him the perfect excuse to stay up on it all night. take the system from him, DO NOT disarm its features if it gives him the said excuse. a lot of his games are dependent on the gimmick to function properly. depending on how old his units are, its ability to access and use nintendo wi-fi connection may be put into question. take them from him.

if he uses his games D.S. or otherwise take those also.

11 year olds need a lot of sleep. this child is immune to your methods of punishment. the appropriate method is ALL distractions gone except the needed things.

  • Punish him by having him sleep on a sleeping bag, air matress, cot or comforter on the floor by your bed. Have him sleep like that for a week, tell him since you can trust him to sleep properly you will have to watch him. Take all his electronics and toys away one hour before bedtime and than have him change and come into your room. Make sure he doesn’t have toys or games on him when he comes for sleep.

  • Well, if he’s struggling with over-stimulation, I would take away the temptation. Tell him until he can get back onto a regular sleeping schedule all those things will be off-limits. In addition, you could also try enforcing some natural consequences. If he doesn’t want to sleep at night, then he cannot come home after school and take an afternoon nap. If he’s grumpy and tired, that’s a product of refusing sleep. Also, make sure if you’re taking things away they’re going into a place he can’t access. My sister locks her son’s video games in her car in the garage when he loses the privilege to use them.

  • give him a rule, let him stay up as long as he wants Friday and Saturday -since it’s not a school night and give him a curfew at 8:30-10: on week days. This might stop it and if not. Make him run a lot before bed. It will be great exercise AND make him tired before he goes to sleep.
