What can I do for my puppy with parvo until the morning? My vet can't see her until then.?

She has been lethargic, vomiting, and diarrhea however, there is no blood in her stools. Her head has begun to shake as well. Please help! Also, what is the survival rate of dogs with this disease?

Update:

I would love to take her now, I live in a town with less than 250 people and the vet is at church. All the other vets in town will not see her because we are not patients of theirs. I’m doing all I can for her until morning. 🙁

Update 2:

I also have an adult dog, who is about 13 months old, and has had ALL Of his shots, he has no symptoms, but should I be concerned for him and should I take him in tomorrow as well? THANKS EVERYONE for all of the help and prayers for my puppy!

Update 3:

I have already called EVERY vet in town…no one will see her tonight…

  • Pedialyte 50-50 with water. If she’s small breed, run her gums with a little sugar water or karo syrup periodically – every 3 hours or so to avoid hypoglcemic shock. And get her in as soon as humanly possible.

Parvo itself isn’t the killer, per se. It’s the dehydration, hypoglycemia, and secondary infections from the compromised immune system and raw intestinal tissue that usually end up killing the puppies.

My vet said from what he’s seen recently – with treatment, he’s only seen 2 deaths in the past two years in his practice. We live in a parvo-prone area – so if your pup gets treatment fast, he has a strong chance of survival.

  • It’s strange, in a town with 25,0 people, that the vets don’t have some kind of emergency plan. If not an emergency vet clinic, at least some type of rotation for pet emergencies.

Keep calling until you find a vet that will see your dog or take him to a town nearby with an emergency clinic. Tomorrow may be too late. I hope things work out for you and your dog.

When the current situation is resolved with your dog, I suggest you find another vet. If your town has no emergency clinic, you need to find a vet that is willing to respond to emergencies!! It would be nice if our animals only got sick or injured between the hours of 8-5, Monday through Friday but unfortunately, that is not the way things happen.

ADD: If you have called every vet in your town with none of them are willing to help, then start calling vets in the town nearest you and keep calling until you find a vet that will see him.

  • Get some pedalite and baby cefial mix it up where it is watery. Use a seeings to put it in the back of the pups mouth and administer it. I would give 1-2 ml every half hour to hour depending on size of dog. I bdaugjt 4 pups trough parvo at the same time with this. You can also put penutbutter in their mouth (protein)or use cooked white rice. Bit deffinently us some pedialite.

Also try to keep her warm. The main reason dogs die from parvo is because if dehydration. Well it depends on the dog if it will service or not. She has to want to live if she is gonna make it through. Bur you do your part also.

  • Take her NOW to another vet who will see her tonight. She might be dead by morning.

If it is parvo, the survival rate when treated by a vet is 80+ %. Treated only at home, 20%.

  • Have her sleep with you tonight. Keep her close to you, so she knows you are there. And the first thing you do in the morning is get her to a vet ASAP! Good luck to you and your puppy.
