What is the quality of the lock in this safe?

I’m making my own safe and wondering if anybody knows about the quality of the lock not the safe itself I know it a pretty poor safe I just care about the lock.

Update:

Sorry about the category guys there isn’t exactly a safe section.

Update :

thanks john i don’t intend to use the safe itself i’m currently making a safe of my own and i can easily modify just about anything i’m going to basically cut around the lock and modify it in the ways you pointed out thanks. i’m only really interested in the lock for the electronics of the lock i’m going to completely re due the mechanism itself 🙂 one more thing the reset system does only work when the safe is unlocked right?

  • That particular safe design has two weaknesses. With a thin metal strip such as one used to hold two holed paper in files, you can trip the reset button and reprogram the code. The solenoid is a plunger solenoid instead of a stepper motor so it can be bounced with a direct hit to the safe, if it bounces out of the way, the bolt can be opened. You can place a plastic ring around the reset button to prevent it from being tripped and position the safe in a location where one can not swing something at it to bounce the solenoid ( ideally you would want the solenoid replaced with a stepper motor but that requires extensive modifications ). Applying more friction to the solenoid could dampen out the vibrations.

The safe also has a bypass key which is a very simple lock with few tumblers ( often wafer tumblers ) that’s easily picked. It’s under the plastic plate with the Yale logo on it. Drilling through the key lock is a quick way to open the safe destructively. There’s also very few combination of keys for that lock so you can easily build a keyring with the keys needed to open the safe.

These flaws are common with the digital safes. A mechanical safe is still the best for security however, changing the code is more difficult with a mechanical safe and mechanical safes aren’t really available except at a high price.

It’s also not a fire proof safe, however lining the interior with type X drywall would give you minutes of fire protection as will surrounding the safe with type X drywall.

It’s a good safe to keep girlfriends out of your wallet which was what I was forced to do with such a safe. Harbour Freight sells a similar safe for under $ about three quarters of the price listed on your link ( unfortunately, Harbour Freight only ships to US destinations ).
