Does anyone know what this is? I just noticed it about 10 minutes ago. Should I try to pull it off? Any help is appreciated.

Update:

@You Need Me, and others, It is a tick. I pulled it off and now his ear is bleeding. Should I put alcohol on it? Thanks for all your help everyone.

Update 2:

Update: I also just pulled this off of his same ear. Is it a tick also? http://i42.tinypic.com/35lg5js.jpg

Update 3:

Update2: The original tick is still moving. Did that mean I successfully removed it without leaving the head on my dog? Here’s a pic of it moving. http://i43.tinypic.com/ru435x.jpg

Update 4:

My last questions are do I still need to take him to the vet? Is lymes disease a problem in Ohio? Thank you for all of your help You Need Me, I really appreciate it 🙂

  • Take it to the vet!!!

  • It’s a tick!!! Grab below the head at skin level and pull it out in one fast, hard shot (even if it takes out the dogs hair) WITHOUT squeezing the body. You don’t want to squeeze it because that will force the poisons into the dog. Then put an antibiotic on it.

Edit: Don’t put vaseline or anything else that will agitate it on it. It will make them vomit into the dogs bloodstream and that’s when your dog will get a disease. Also, it’s been on less than 48 hrs, otherwise it would be full and have dropped off by itself.

Edit: Don’t twirl it off either. By twisting its head off, you run into the same vomit problem. Just man up and yank.

Edit: You can use alcohol if that’s all you have, put it may sting him a little. Hydrogen Peroxide is good, Neosporin, anything like that. But alcohol is alright too. Since he’s been on so long feeding, you’ll probably get a big scab. They take a long time to heal. Keep an eye on it until it’s gone to make sure it’s not getting infected and keep putting antibiotics on it until it looks healthy.

Edit again! hahah Since it’s Spring now and you two will be out a lot more, check her every night and every morning for ticks. If you went out during the day, you probably won’t feel them until the next morning after they’ve fed a little and get bigger. They’re pretty small before they feed. Google in images, tick before and after eating. It’s remarkable, really.

Update: Yup. That’s what they look like before they fill up.

Update 2: Yeah. That’s great it’s still moving. That means you did it right because without his head, he’d be dead! And I forgot to tell you to throw the old tick into a glass of alcohol or flush it down the toilet or down the sink drain. Taking him to the vet is up to you. Odds are very good that your dog is OK because, 1) you pulled him out right 2) that tick may not have been carrying Lyme 3) only 10% of dogs that get bitten by a tick that carries Lyme get it. So odds are in your favor. The next time you go, ask for a blood test for “tick-borne illnesses”. I forget what it’s actually called, but they’ll know what you are talking about. They now have a vacination for Lyme, but I won’t give it to my dog (and she’s a Champion German Shepherd) because I’m of the school of thought that the risk of the vacine is higher than the risk of her getting Lyme. If they offer it to you, that’s your choice though. I wouldn’t though. Research more on your own if you’re not sure.

  • Hello There! A canine starts offevolved to lift its leg according to levels of testestorone in the body…The lifting is an try and place his urine larger (on the tree) where it has less chance of being blotted out with the aid of another canine, gives an impression of dimension and is extra likely to be at ‘nostril’ top for any one . Most dogs begin this at about 6 months of age however giant puppies more often than not take longer. Castration before the canine lifts his leg with frequency can influence in a good longer wait…And plenty of won’t take up the addiction at all. In regards to ears…..Its quicker for those who do not play with them! The approach happens in line with strengthening cartilidge, the higher the ears the improved the cartilidge wants to turn out to be earlier than they’ll get up strongly. My Shepherds ears have been up at around 5 months…It occurred in a single day – and the cat did not realize him, which was once a bit of of amusing!!! However they did collapse once more after which slowly got improved and stronger. Absolutely some dogs can recieve damage to the cartilidge or genetic versions could intent the ear to remain in the drooped role. You will hear of some breeders that aid the ears to stand by using taping them…But this is risky and sure most effective to work if you understand what you might be doing. Provide the little fella time …. And benefit from the dog face at the same time you continue to have it!!!!

  • I wanna say that this is a tick, but I can’t see if it has legs or not. My dog has a small bump on the back of her head about that size, but it doesn’t stick out like that, and it’s the same color of her skin. I really think that’s a tick. Just take it out with a pair of tweezers, and examine it and the area well to make sure you got the head out as well.

  • I believe that is a very large tick. Do Not Try To Pull It Off. That’s the worst thing you can do because sometimes the head breaks off and stays in your dog! Put a bit of dish soap around it, then gently rub your finger in circles around it until it falls off. If you have no dish soap, don’t worry about it. That thing is so huge that just rubbing around it in circles will get it off. Then get your poor pup checked for lymes disease. If you are positive it is not a tick and I am seeing the picture wrong, wrap a very small rubberband around it until tight. It will cut off the circulation and the lump will fall off without hurting your dog. It will take several days. However, I REALLY think that’s a tick, so please try the circle thing before you do anything else.

  • Looks like a tick. If your dog will stay still enough try to take it off. If not then put petroleum jelly over it and it will back out on its own. Also you may want to call the vet and make sure your dog will not get sick since it looks like its been on there a while.

  • i think it may be a cyst, go to the vet pronto
