What’s a good mileage for a golf?

The car that I want to get is a VW Golf 1.4 1998-24, petrol, hatchback.

For £8 – £12 I can get one with 1,0 – 160,0 miles
For £12 – £20 I can get one with 60,0 – 140,0 miles

How many miles would you expect the car to do without needing constant repairs, given that it’s been treated well?

Any advice when it comes to buying a car for the first time.

  • For a small-displacement gas-fueled car such as the 1.4 Golf 60 to 120k miles is ok, more may be a risk, depending on how well it was kept and if the history is documented. You must allow for some consumables, such as brake pads, spark plugs, fluids, tires, wipers…
A VW will never need constant repairs, on average they are very reliable if properly maintained and Golfs are among the best in the VW/Audi family.
One important note: before buying have the car assessed by an expert, preferably with VW hands-on experience. Whatever you pay him/her will be offset by reliable performance in time.
