Where can I take fencing classes?

I’m 13 year old and I want to take Fencing classes this year 🙂 I live in Fall River, Massachusetts and I was wondering if there are any near by places where I can join Fencing, My other question would be, How much does it cost? I need to know how much I will be spending. My other questions would be… Do you have to try out for Fencing?, Are there other people in your class or do you do classes one-on-one? If you do classes with other people, How many kids are in your class at the max?, Do you have to do competitions? If so, Is there a travel team for it? My last question would be, How dangerous is fencing classes? Thank You for taking the time to answer my questions

  • Well i can say you picked the right sport. fencing is one of the oringinal sports of the revived olympics. although it is unpopular herein the U.S. it holds alot of sacred MArtial form to it that many of the watered down sports in the olympics don’t have. To tell you the truth fencing can be hard to find. it is rare but you probably can find a fencing coach close by if you look hard enough. prey about it. thats what helped me find my fencing coach. triplet fencing had good equipment. no yo don’t have to try out for fencing. it’s rare so you will be one of the few. most likely. usally 3-15 people. for all ages. not many fencers usally. yes it is critical that you compete. the fencers are graded who make it from A to C or D i think. you will need to score high to prove your metal. yes there are competitions. when you find a coach they can help you enter comptitiions. don’t know about the traveling part. i would say yes. Fencing when properly equipt is not very dangerious at all. proper equipment and good coaches and peers. will reduce injury probablys to acal sprains and bruses if you fence saber. it is very fun and can be rewarding. i hope it goes well. the united states need good fencers because europe dominates it. good luck.

  • Fencing (European fencing) isn’t too popular in the US, as the first answerer said.

I googled your location, and the nearest Fencing school is 50+ miles away. You can probably check yourself as well just to be sure.

However, there are other forms of fencing from different parts of the world, and Kendo (Japanese fencing) is one of them. You might be interested in spectating a class first, or learning more about it online. I’ve practiced Kendo for a few years now, and I love it. Just make sure you’re 1% sure of what you’re getting into, as with anything.

Also, make sure you find an accredited Kendo dojo, if you do decide to go for it anyway… Learning kendo from a McDojo or learning fake Kendo is worse than not learning it at all.

I’m not sure how close Fall River is to any of these locations in MA, but check these out (this link is from the US’ Kendo federation, so accredited dojos):
