Which driver do you admire?

I’ve just won the Nissan GT Academy Australian final and am heading to Silverstone UK to both represent Australia in the International stage of the GT Academy programme and learn how to become a real race car driver.

I’d like to be like Glenn Seton. What driver do you admire?

Without a doubt Sir Stirling Moss, I remember watching him race as a teenager, he was every school boys hero.

He has been one of the few drivers who raced just for the love of it, he drove British cars whenever possible when he would no doubt have won several championships in foreign ones.

He was also one of the finest TRUE SPORTSMEN in the world, by helping his great friend and rival Mike Hawthorn in the 1958 Portuguese Grand Prix, it cost him enough points to lose the world championship to his friend which was his for the taking, a true gentleman of the sport.

Have a look at my link and see what the inherent dangers of F1 cars were in those days, and how dangerous some of the tracks were, one of my favourite quotes of his sums this up.

“To race a car through a turn at maximum speed, is difficult”, he said, “but to race a car at maximum speed through that same turn when there is a brick wall on one side and a precipice on the other – Ah, that’s an achievement.”

Sir Jack Brabham I admire because he’s the only guy to build his own F-1 car and win a world championship. Also Jim Clark and Graham Hill: not only for their superb skill-personally I think Jim Clark was the most talented driver of all time-they raced in a completely different era that ultimately caused them to die doing what they did best, which inherently made the sport better.

My old favorite driver is Colin “McCrash” McRae-absolutely fantastic driver who I think has the best driving style of all time-fast as possible all the time, regardless.

But…

Just recently a guy named Bill Caswell is my new hero. A man who bought a $5 crapcan off Craigslist to run against the $4,0-plus rally cars in a World Rally Championship race earlier this month.
He entered the biggest motorsport event of his life with no crew; an untested, week-old E30 M3 engine swap and a junkyard transmission; a car that was still covered in dirt from the previous season’s rallies (“I’d wash it, but I gotta fix stuff instead”); and a rented panel van. His co-driver, a Rally America genius named Ben Slocum, had not spent more than five minutes in a car with him prior to the event. He did this not out of stupidity, but out of a lack of resources — he wanted to go rallying, and this was the only way he could make it happen.

Amazingly, they finished third in their class.

The driver I admire most is definetely Joey Logano. I’m 13 years old now. When I was four and a half, I began driving quarter midgets. This was before Logano was famous. To be precise, I actually had his exact car, bought directly from his family, because he raced at the same racetrack as I race at now. I can’t say that I did nearly as good as him, but i tried my best, and that’s all that counts. I admire Joey because he never gave up, no matter what happened, and I know he’s put a lot of effort into everything, and still is. He is a famous racecar driver, goes to school, and started out in a small hometown.

I’d like to be like Takumi Fuijiwara from anime series Initial D. He’s got a cool way of racing and adapts his driving according to the racing situation. I admire the skill he shows and that with lots of training anything is possible.

From real world of racing I admire Michael Schumacher for his excellent technique on any machine he drives or rides (Watch him on a motorbike, he’s still quick).

It’s a toss up between Sir Jackie Stewart and Sir Stirling Moss. Both were amazing drivers in their day and both have inspired many young drivers to take up the sport. I admire them for their courage and their bravery because when they drove, the sport was much more dangerous as it is these days – many of their colleagues were seriously injured or even died, but they carried on to win 43 races between them.

Gentleman Jim Richards, amazing driver with an amazing career and always has time for the fans.

Sir Jack Brabham was really amazing, not only did he win Drivers Championship in F! he did it in a car he designed and built himself !!

Peter Brock was great driver but his off-track life was a little troubled and finally Ayrton Senna was just so gifted you wonder how far he could have gone.

Mark Webber hes had his struggles with bad teams and bad cars but in past few seasons really show that aussie spirit of grit aand determination tio succeed in following his dreams not to mention all the charity work he does.

also jamie whincup,craig lowndnes and of course brocky deserve a mention.

When I was a kid my favourite was Alain Prost. I remember Keke Rosberg saying that watching Prost was frustrating because you would throw your car around trying to bleed every last hundredth of a second on your fast laps and you’d be sitting up the top of the list, then Alain would come along, drive clinically and cleanly and apparently conservatively…and he’d end up on pole.

I also loved Senna, of course, His ability to take risks that others (Prost included) refused to was just legendary. it was like he was at one with the car. His pass on Alesi in Montreal was amazing. And Michael…16th to 1st in Spa.

As far as Australian drivers, I always liked Seto. We were brought up Ford kids and Seto just seemed so unassuming. He always deserved more success than he had. I also really liked Jim Richards in his 635CSI JPS years with BMW. The Rainmaster.

Dead: Ayrton Senna. I admire everything about the man. He is the perfect role model for every human being. He is simply the best driver to ever walk this earth.

Living: Rubens Barrichello for his determination to succeed even to the very end. He still wont give up hopes of a championship after 17 years.

I’m sure you’ve never heard of the Nascar Series but Jimmy Johnson is the most incredible driver I’ve ever seen,going for his 5th straight series championship in probably the most competitive series in all of auto racing and he’s still young so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him win many more championships before the end of his career and I doubt anyone else will win one unless he retires.I don’t really care to see him win every year but I gotta respect his talent.

Bob Morris.

He suffered motion sickness and won Bathurst covered in his own vomit. He also turned up on the weekend without a car, got a drive in a Torana, and moved it up the qualifying table from nowhere to front row.

Also Niki Lauda. One of the last genuinely hard men of motorsport.

Daniel, I admire Bill Forbes. He’s 74 and his drivin is not bad. The advantage of being a mature diver is that pot-holes don’t exist as far as the seasoned mature diver is concerned. At most, you get a jolt up the spine on a big bloody ******** of a pot-hole, but complaining or having a winge about them don’t get you anywhere.
