Why NASCAR fans racist?

Im a black dude and was at a race for the first time last weekend at Talladega. Im not really into NASCAR but my friend had an extra ticket and told me Talladega would be one of the best races for me to see. On Sunday, before the big rain delay, the people were pretty disrespectful to me in the section I was in. Calling me derogatory names. I couldn’t really due nothing since it seemed like they people were all like-minded and together.

The race experience was good, but definitely never going to a NASCAR function again. Nothing but closed-minded people, bad fanbase.

Update:

@Chicken George: Wait, how am I the bad guy here? I never did anything.

  • First off, I want to point out that your in Alabama. Next, you can’t judge an entire fan base off of a bunch of idiots at Talladega. I’m also sure you can go to any type of sporting event and hear derogatory names pointed at fans and players. I’ve seen it happen, so it ain’t just Nascar. I’m a huge Nascar fan, I’m white and I’m not a racist. All I’m saying is that people are going to be idiots no matter where you go. It being a Nascar race, NFL game or to your local bar. I don’t want to say **** happens get over it because that ain’t right. You should send your concerns of what happened to Nascar and the track president were they can make changes were this can be stopped.

Speaking for myself, sorry that happened. Hope you change your mind and go to another race. Not all fans are like that.

  • I play NASCAR Inside line for the PS3 online everyday. I only race at Talladega. C’mon man… we all know what Talladega is known for… “the big wreck” well it happen down the dog leg coming to the checkered flag, I bounced of the wall ad came down across his nose and we both wrecked and the third place car won My bad “DustinMcGee” yeah I putting your racist *** on blast, well when I turn on my mic I was called all kind of racist names from Wendell Scott to rubber neck, it got as far as him telling me to pick another hobby like basketball and leave NASCAR to the white guys… If Im not mistaken Basketball was started by a white guy and a peach basket I don’t want to buy or play NASCAR14for thePS3 if I gotta take this kind abuse over the internet. PSS DustinMcGee, NASCAR isn’t racist, You are!!!

  • Not all the fans are like that… but yeah, at Talladega, I’m not truly surprised tbh. Don’t let this ruin NASCAR Racing for you, there are lots of tracks you can visit where you will not be around people like that. In the tracks in the North, Midwest, Southwest, etc., you won’t have to experience that. If you had a fun time other than that, then try one of the tracks outside of the Southeast. I bet Homestead- Miami Speedway would be a good track that is in the Southeast where you won’t meet racist people. I saw lots of black people at the race in Martinsville, VA about a month ago. No racism there. It’s not like that at all tracks, and not all the fans are racist rednecks, or rednecks at all actually.

  • It probably has more with being in Alabama than NASCAR fans. Sure, a lot of NASCAR fans are rednecks and I’m sure some are racist, but not all of them are racist. I’ve been to races at Dover and Richmond and have never seen anyone say anything derogatory to some of the black fans. After the Richmond race a few weeks ago, there was a black street drumming band and everyone loved them (See link below).

  • Wow, you must be an exception. All my life I’ve heard “black dudes” complain about how they are treated, and you didn’t experience anything like that until you went to a NASCAR race in Alabama? And apparently, in your mind, it’s ok to generalize “Nothing but closed-minded people, bad fanbase.” Just sayin’…

Do me a favor. The next time your friend has an extra NASCAR ticket, let me know.

  • I do not have a complete answer and I am sorry what you may have went through. Rain delays sometimes bring the worst out of people because they tend to be boring. Talladega is still like the deep South so I am surprised your friends recommended this race to you.

  • Not all fans are like that. I think it’s just that you’re in Alabama, and I’ve met some pretty racist white people there. I’ve gone to a race in Phoenix, and I didn’t see, or hear any racism. I’m sorry that people were like that to you.

  • How the hell can you be in alabama without even thinking to hear racist slurs? alabama is the biggest redneck state and they’d kill you for being for gay marriage, against nascar or for hillary clinton, and this is just what i saw on top gear!

@roughboy68oh: Andrew McCutchen, Center Fielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates. This player is black. What kind of sh*t argument is this what you used? An Asian can still be an asian if his name is peter and not chin or so.

  • Good point, but I’m not 1% convinced

  • Andrew, not all Nascar fans are racist. I, for one, am not a racist, and I’m sorry to hear about your experience. There will always be racism, sadly, until we are all the same color, the same ethnicity, the same origin. It’s because man fears difference in other men. I hope that you will return to a NASCAR race again and have a better experience.
